Indie developer Zojoi has announced Shadowgate VR: The Mines Of Mythrok (SGVR) is coming to the Oculus Quest store October 7th, 2021. Shadowgate is a point-and-click adventure game series that was first published in 1987 on the Apple Macintosh.
Since then Shadowgate has received a number of iterations and sequels, with the latest remake (simply named Shadowgate) appearing on PC in 2014, before getting ported to PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in 2019.
Shadowgate takes place in the world of "Tyragon", a fantasy world filled with mythical creatures and powerful magic. As the protagonist you are on a quest to stop the dreaded Warlock Lord who inhabits the living castle of Shadowgate that sits atop Gatekeeper Mountain.
It's unclear how closely this latest installment will stick to the original story of its predecessors.
Whilst we can expect the same familiar dungeon exploration, puzzle solving, monster fighting, and magic wielding as previous installments, this latest version seems much more interactive and immersive.
For example, in the trailer we see players needing to physically raise their shield to block fireballs or climb hand-over-hand across a rope suspended above a chasm.
SGVR boasts deep cavernous mountains, mystic chambers, and trap-laden hallways to explore. Players will also get to wield a sorcerer's wand and an impervious shield to take on the deadly beasts that lie waiting withing the castle walls.
Alongside monsters and traps, there will also be devious puzzles to solve using both your wits and your raven companion Odin. Puzzles will require players to divine magical symbols, disable hidden traps, and decipher ingenious riddles.
Other gameplay features include discovering ancient artifacts, riding dwarven minecarts and unlocking ten in-game achievements. To see some of the game in action, check out the trailer below.
